This is actually good news, because we have control over our thoughts, which ultimately means we have control over our level of happiness as well.
So, when you’re feeling anxious or upset, Noah recommends asking what stories am I telling myself? It may be that you believe you can never be happy because of a bad experience in the past. Or you might feel that happiness is out of your reach, because of uncertainties surrounding your marriage, your job or your finances.
Once you’re clear about what’s making you unhappy, you then need to ask is it really true? Often we make assumptions about our lives and become so entrenched in a particular point of view that we cease to realize there is a happy alternative. But the more you delve into whether your story is really true, the more often you find that it isn’t and that happiness is within your grasp after all.
