Where does a lack of self-belief come from?
It’s important to understand where negative thoughts come from, because it’s our thoughts that drive the emotions and behaviors that stop us from overcoming our doubts and moving forward.
Debbie explains that our self-doubts have come from a lifetime of experiences. Experiences where we’ve felt hurt, judged or rejected by something that someone else has said to us. All of this goes into our sub-conscious mind which expresses itself in our thinking.
Our subconscious mind is there to keep us safe from harm. So negative thoughts come up to protect us from being hurt or rejected by all those things we felt as a child and didn’t know how to deal with. What we did was to create a prison around us which says if I keep myself small, if I don’t put myself out there, then I won’t get hurt and rejected. This becomes a belief and, as an adult, we find ourselves staying inside our comfort zone.
Our doubts are simply the past coming into the present moment.
So how do we break out of this negative mindset?
The answer lies in creating new evidence to shape our future. Because every time we don’t put ourselves out there, we’re re-affirming the belief that we don’t believe in ourselves. And the more we do this, the harder it is to break out in the future.
In contrast, every time we break out, we’re dissolving all the past evidence that proves we can’t do something.
How to Create New Evidence
A lack of self-belief comes up when you’ve never done something before or done something and failed. So you need to equip yourself to deal with similar situations in the future.
Debbie indicates that the first step is to embrace humility. If you don’t know the answer, then ask for help. Find a mentor and talk to them.
Secondly, you need to upskill. Don’t get stuck in a victim mentality. Go out there and learn what you need to learn.
And finally, learn all of the information and knowledge you need. If you don’t know what your next step is, get resourceful, do some research and learn from others.
As you take these three steps, your self-belief grows to the point where you don’t even think about it.
Then all you need do is repeat this process everything you hit the fear barrier and are tempted to stay inside your comfort zone.
The more you break through the fear barrier and create new evidence, the closer you’ll move towards your end goals and desires.
Importance of Faith
By definition, faith is the opposite of doubt.
It’s believing in things you don’t see, believing in the best possible outcome and believing you can do it.
So, as you start to create new evidence that you can do something you’ve not done before, believe you can do it.
Say to yourself I can do it.
Don’t let your negative self-talk get in the way. And don’t let fear and resistance undermine your self-belief and stop you from going out and living the life you want to lead.
