Debbie helps us understand that worry is a choice we make even though it may not feel like it. Her simple 3-step method shows us how we can shift from a life dominated by worry to one where we feel in control.
Step 1: Awareness
In Step 1, Debbie recommends making a list of all your worries, because this simple action clarifies exactly what you’re worried about. And even more important, it has the effect of releasing a lot of your worry and making you feel better.
Step 2: Ownership
When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s very easy to get stuck in a victim mentality, where you feel there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
So, in Step 2, Debbie suggests going through everything on your list and asking yourself:
- How did I contribute to this situation?
- What did I do to make this situation happen?
She points out that until you take ownership, you can’t change.
But, there’s an important caveat here. There may be circumstances that are genuinely outside your control, such as a loved one being diagnosed with a terminal illness, and so for these sorts of situations, the Step 2 questions aren’t applicable.
Step 3: Change
Step 3 involves going through each of your worries and asking:
- How can I change this situation right now?
- What action can I take to improve things?
While you sit and worry, you get stuck, so you have to create some momentum, and when you do, you start to recognize how much power you really do have over your life.
In a Nutshell
What you’re doing here is switching from reactive thinking (where everything seems hopeless and you feel helpless) to proactive thinking (where you’re finding solutions and creating change). And this has the wonderful effect of releasing the immobilizing hold that worry has over your mind.
